These photos are from a piece I choreographed on five dancers for a Second Avenue Dance Company Concert in December, 2021. “We Just Get Old” explores the stages of human emotions and the ways in which they ask us to lean on each other for support or answers during hard times. Beginning in an anxious emotional headspace, we watch as calm is forced to the inner core, however, we still see the struggle itching under the skin, pushing itself to the surface. When the body doesn’t listen to this urge to address these big feelings, the emotions explode into a state of frenzy. This volatile state is completely unstable and calls for a moment to be quiet, and slow down. In a final resolution, we see the human figure searching and acknowledging others in an attempt to find answers, only to realize that at 20 years old, we can’t know everything yet. All we know is that if we just keep going, we’ll just get old.
